The smoke of burning white sage has been used to cleanse spaces, rooms, people and crystals, and generally ward off negative energy. 

This process is called 'smudging'. 

The botanical name for sage is Salvia apiana, with salvia stemming from the Latin word 'to heal'.

White sage can be used for welcoming in the new day or cleansing the body, home or workplace, but is also used in ceremonial occasions. By smudging with respect the symbolism goes beyond the physical to enhance your spiritual connection.

How to use your Sage Smudge Stick 

When using sage to purify anything, first, set the intention that it will be used for purifying and cleansing.

Ensure you have a heatproof container to hold under the sage once you have lit it, for example an earthenware dish or abalone shell.

Light the sage, let it burn for a few seconds and then extinguish the flames. Smoke will start billowing out from the smudge stick.

At this point, you can wave the stick around each corner of the room you are looking to cleanse, with the dish underneath the stick, or around the person or object. As you are doing this, you can set intentions by speaking them out aloud or in your head. 

To put the smudge stick out you can butt it out into the bowl or a stubb it into a little bit of water. Leave on the sink until fully extinguished

Never inhale the smoke or leave burning sage unattended.
